Everything You Need To Know About Dental Implants

At 19 Wimpole Street, an expert dental practice located near Marylebone, we proudly offer a range of fantastic dental treatments that can help restore and enhance your smile. We put our teeth through their paces every day: crunchy foods, teeth grinding, poor oral hygiene, smoking and more. Sometimes, our habits can cause problems like tooth decay, which can lead to tooth loss. Or, you may lose a tooth through no fault of your own, like an accident or injury. Whatever the reason for the gaps in your smile, we can help with dental implants. So, today, we’ll take a closer look at what they are, what they’re made of and how they can create an attractive, healthy-looking smile that suits you.

So, what are dental implants?

In a nutshell, dental implants are false teeth. But unlike being attached to a removable piece of apparatus – like a bridge or set of dentures – they’re permanently implanted into your gums. This makes them durable, long-lasting and natural-looking.

Why have dental implants?

We’ve already touched on some of these reasons, but it might be that you’ve knocked a tooth out, or you could have had poor hygiene in the past that contributed to decay and tooth loss. You might have had treatment for periodontitis, which causes tooth loss and gum recession. Whatever it is, if you’re suitable for treatment, there are plenty of benefits; namely a stable, seamless smile that restores bite and chew function and restores a confident smile, too.

What’s the treatment process?

It’s a straightforward procedure in most cases. You’ll need a consultation first, to check the treatment is suitable and make sure you feel comfortable at our practice, with our team and with the procedure itself. Next, we’ll book you in – and place the dental implants directly into your gums. These are placed in two parts – the metal root, and then the porcelain crown, to allow for healing in between. But, you’ll be given a temporary crown to wear in the meantime.

What’s healing like?

Most people manage just with over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol, and of course, you’ll have a local anaesthetic during the procedure. If you notice anything unusual – excessive bleeding, pus, a foul smell in the mouth – it could be a sign of infection, and we’ll need to see you back at our dental practice.

How do I start the process?

It’s easy! Just get in touch with the dental practice here near Marylebone, and we will arrange your dental implant consultation.
